TRAVELING ART HISTORIES: CIRCULATION OF IDEAS, FORMS AND OBJECTS

CIRCULATION OF IDEAS, FORMS AND OBJECTS

TRAVELING ART HISTORIES: CIRCULATION OF IDEAS, FORMS AND OBJECTS

PRESENTATION

The Centre for Art History and Artistic Research (CHAIA) of the University of Évora and the Art History Institute (IHA) of the New University of Lisbon are implementing a partnership with the research group MODOS (Art Histories: ways of seeing, exhibit and understanding), that brings together six Brazilian post-graduation programmes in visual arts (PPGAV-UFRJ, PPGAV-Unicamp, PPG-Arte-UnB, PPGAV-UFRGS, PPGAV-UFBA, PPGARTES-UERJ), with the goal of promote Luso-Brazilian research projects in the art history domain.

PROPOSAL

We are accustomed to consider the artwork in the immobility of museums, when circulation is an inherent part of their nature as things of the world, in front of their political, economic, social and cultural reality. Art works, artists and public are travelers. We are all travelers. We live in travel times.

The travel, in its various aspects and variants, can be invoked as a means to understand the circulation of forms and ideas between regions, states and continents that led to changes in the ways of doing and thinking art. The travels of exploration, knowledge and formation, the travels of territorial, commercial and territorial influence expansion, the playful journey: war and diplomacy, commerce, empires and globalization, centers of artistic production and formation, the Grand Tour, tourism, etc.

The travels, through the possibility of the discovery of the other, contribute to the redefinition and construction of artistic identities, by opposition or contact zones that create an aesthetic specificity through a historical theory, a process of heritization, creation or integration of/in a museum or collection.

Therefore the importance of travel as a key concept for the historical understanding of artistic objects, their reception and perception, their conservation and exhibition, the changes they have played and represented in different historical periods.

The research group MODOS, the CHAIA/UÉ and the IHA/UNL invite researchers to submit unpublished papers in order to think and debate the circulation of ideas, forms and objects from a critical and contemporary view concerning the traveling art histories.
