CHAIA – Centro de História da Arte e Investigação Artística da Universidade de Évora (Centre for Art History and Artistic Research) is an R&D Unit under the tutelage of the FCT – Fundação Para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology), whose area of activity parts from the study of the various manifestations of the historical-artistic legacy, landscape and monuments, towards a consolidation of knowledge of the various modes of artistic expression and also directed towards study and research into artistic practice, artistic creation and intervention in space.
CHAIA goes back to 1987, when it was called the Instituto de História da Arte da Universidade de Évora. Following regulamentation and restructuring in 1994 as CHA (Centro de História da Arte – Centre for Art History), in 2008 it became the Centro de História da Arte e Investigação Artística (the present CHAIA), retaining the general principles present from the outset, such as the aim of linking the objectives of promoting an advanced level of knowledge with those of Higher Education.
The Centre includes teaching staff and researchers in the areas of Visual Arts, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, History of Art, Theatre and Music.
