Evora's Retable And The Flemish Painting In Southern Europe
International Colloquium, Évora

The Retable of Evora's Cathedral was ordered by bishop D. Afonso de Portugal sometime after 1495 to an unknown Flemish workshop, probably in Bruges. Composed of 19 paintings, it was incorporated in the State Patrimony in 1911 and now belongs to the Evora's Museum collection, representing one of the most important series of Flemish painting in Portugal. Between 2005 and 2008
these paintings have been restored and the object of laboratorial studies by two institutions now joint together as the Instituto dos Museus e da Conservação.In 2008, this research was published in the Colloquium «Looking Closely the Flemish Primitives of the Évora's Museum», while an Exhibition in the National Museum of Ancient Art displayed the Evora's retable after the restoration
(Cadernos de Conservação e Restauro 6/7,Lisboa,2009). The aim of this colloquium is to increase the knowledge regarding this
remarkable retable and therefore to be able to look at it through a whole new perspective, associating it with the Flemish painting production of this period and with the fascination for Flemish painting shown by the countries in Southern
Europe.
